Journal History

The Journal Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases is one of the oldest medical periodicals in Russia. During all time of its issue, the outstanding scientists of USSR and Russia were its editors-in-chief and editorial board members - academicians and professors in the field of tuberculosis control and pulmonology.

It has been proven by the time that the uniting mission of the Journal declared by its founders, has been implemented through all these years, demonstrating the high professional level and encouraging commitment and team spirit in several generations of the Russian phthisiologists.

The Journal has been published for 94 years. The first issue of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases was published in May 1923 and since that, it had been published under various titles:

1923 - 1931 - Problems of Tuberculosis (Problemy Tuberkulyoza)

01.1932 - 08.1935 - Tuberculosis Control (Bor'ba s Tuberkulezom)

09.1935 - 03.2003 - Problems of Tuberculosis (Problemy Tuberkuleza)

04.2003 - 06.2009 - Problems of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (Problemy Tuberkuleza i Bolezni Legkikh)

07.2009 till present - Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (Tuberkulyoz i Bolezni Legkikh)

In 1923 the editorial board of the Journal was based in two cities - in Moscow and Petrograd.

From 1923 to 1928 6 issues were published each year. The Journal was issued by RSFSR Narkomzdrav and funded by the state.  Since 1928 12 issues were published each year by the State Medical Publisher.

In 1931 Volf S. Kholtsman became the editor-in-chief and the status of the editorial board secretaries was restored, and the numbers of members of the editorial board increased up to 15 persons, and in 1935 - up to 20 persons.

Starting from 1933 Mikhail A. Klebanov became the secretary of the Journal.  From 1934 the Journal had been issued by the State Publishing House of Biological and Medical Literature.

In 1937-1939 the Journal was issued by USSR Medgiz Narkomzdrav  Publishing House, Moscow.

During the Great Patriotic War, the issue of the Journal continued, though in 1942-1956 the number of issues were cut down to 6 per year - due to hardships of the wars and years after.  From 1957 to 1962 8 issues were published each year.  Starting from 1963 again the Journal had been published each month.  From 1964 to 2009 the Journal was issued by Meditsina Publishing House, Moscow.

In the 90s Alexander G. Khomenko, RAMS Academician, was the editor-in-chief of the Journal.

In 2000 after Academician Khomenko died, Mikhail I. Perelman became the editor-in-chief.  From 2001 9 issues of the Journal had been coming out each year, starting from 2002 the monthly issue has been restored.  

Mikhail I. Perelman suggested expanding the Journal profile and since 2003 it has been published under the title of Problems of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases containing articles not only about tuberculosis but other pulmonary diseases.

As per RF Government Edict no. 227 as of April 20, 2006, the Higher Professional Licensing Board by the RF Ministry of Education and Science compiled the list of main peer-reviewed journals where main research results of dissertations for candidate and doctor degrees are to be published.  

 The Journal Problems of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases was included into that list.

 In 2009 the Journal changed its title to Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases and started to be issued by NEW T ERRA Publishing House.

Vladislav V. Erokhin was the editor-in-chief of the Journal from April 2012 until November 2014.

At present, the Journal is headed by Prof. Irina A. Vasilieva, Director of Phthisiopulmonology Research Institute of I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, President of the Russian Phthisiologists' Society/Association of Phthisiologists, Chief Visiting Phthisiologist of the Russian Ministry of Health.

At present time the Journal is a peer-reviewed periodical included into VAC listing.  Analysis of the Journal publication activity at elibrary.ru website confirms its high citation rates.  The Journal is amongst the top ten as per the rating in Medicine and Health Care.  In 2014 RINC two-year impact factor made 0.426.

The Journal publishes the results of theoretical and practical research, informs the reader about current achievements and constraints of tuberculosis control, pulmonology and thoracic surgery, fundamental research, assists in the education of young doctors and researchers, thus promoting the implementation of the major mission of medicine - successful treatment and prevention of diseases.
